Gardners Books is to create 100 new jobs in Sussex with a huge expansion to its existing storage facility in Eastbourne.

The media wholesaler and distributor is to add further storage space at Whittle Drive, doubling capacity at its Eastbourne premises.

Gardners Books already employs 800 people in full and part time roles at its Sussex base, but the expansion will see the firm increase its headcount by more than 12 per cent once the recruitment drive is complete.

The new facility should be ready in around twelve months and will mean that Gardners Books can store over eight million books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl LPs and other media items at the Eastbourne warehouse.

Explaining why his firm was adding a new extension in Eastbourne, the company’s director, Andrew Little, said, “International sales of book, entertainment and digital products have expanded by an impressive 24.4 per cent over the past few years, meaning Gardners has firmly established itself as a world leader in the book and entertainment product supply chain and the largest supplier of English language books in the world outside of the USA.”

“Gardners is committed to re-investment in the business and locally. The fast-paced project is due for completion in autumn 2018 with the new development forecast to provide up to 100 new jobs for Eastbourne and the surrounding areas, enhancing the more than 800 strong existing workforce,” added Mr Little.

Welcoming the news, Eastbourne MP, Stephen Lloyd, said: “It was really eye-opening to see the new expansion being built at Gardners. The biggest English language book supplier in Europe, Gardners’ continued investment in Eastbourne is a tribute to the business’ confidence in their industry and our town.”

Gardners Books parent company, Little Group, has this year featured on the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200. The list ranks the top 200 of the UK’s mid-market private companies which have the fastest-growing international sales.
