Aldi To Create 400 Full Or Part Time Warehouse Jobs In Bedford

German supermarket chain Aldi has announced plans for a new distribution centre in Bedford which could create around 400 new full or part time warehouse jobs.

The 400 Bedford jobs at Aldi are in addition to the 4,000 new vacancies that the firm pledged to create across the UK in July.

The firm now has around 700 stores across the UK but plans to expand to more than one thousand over the next five years and will need more staff and distribution centres to keep up with supply.

The new distribution facility at Hardwick Hill in the Elstow area of Bedford would cover almost 950,000 square feet but is still subject to planning application being granted.

If Bedford Borough Council gives the green light to the project then Aldi will create hundreds of jobs for the local area and the warehouse would service parts of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire as well as Bedfordshire.

Explaining why his supermarket chain was continuing its expansion, Aldi UK chief executive, Matthew Barnes, said: “More than half of all UK households now regularly shop with us and many more prospective customers tell us they would switch supermarkets if there was an Aldi nearby. This gives us the confidence to continue investing in our operations and infrastructure.”
