Students can save money with certain tempting broadband deals - experts have advised - as long as they read the small print.
PC World and Orange are currently offering free laptops, worth around £300, to those customers signing up for the Orange Starter broadband package.
The deal offers 2Mb broadband with a two gig usage limit at £14.99 per month, plus the first three months at £7.49 per month.
There is, of course, a catch. Customers need to sign up for a full two year contract - and those who try and get out early are likely to incur fairly severe penalty fines.
The laptop available is an Ei Systems 3101, with XP home, 256Mb RAM, a Celeron processor and a 40 gig hard drive.
In simple terms, it's far from the most advanced or powerful computer on the market. However, students who mainly write essays, emails and browse the web may well find it suits their needs.
Steve Weller, head of communications services at uSwitch, remains optimistic.
Referring to broadband deals offering free laptops, he said: "I believe that these offers will mark the beginning of new price war, as more providers compete to provide the best broadband service whilst offering the most attractive laptop.
"It is already a very competitive market and ultimately the consumer will stand to gain."
