Aldi To Create 4,000 Supermarket Jobs In The UK

In another major round of recruitment, Aldi has announced expansion plans which will see it create 4,000 supermarket jobs in the UK.

The German supermarket chain is continuing its UK expansion roll out with plans to have 1,000 stores across the nation before the end of 2022.

Aldi currently has around 700 supermarkets in the UK but expects to open around 60 new stores for each of the next five years.

Most of the 4,000 jobs will be for roles as store assistants but there will be some managerial positions up for grabs at Aldi too.

Commenting on the recruitment drive, Aldi's UK chief executive Matthew Barnes said: “We need more high-performing individuals to help us achieve our growth plans. In return we offer market-leading pay and benefits and career development opportunities that are unrivalled in the supermarket sector.”

“The success of Aldi in the UK is due to the hard work and commitment of our employees, and they are crucial to our future expansion plans. Our approach is to recruit the best people in retail and invest in their long-term career development to ensure they operate in an environment where they feel engaged, motivated and challenged,” added Mr Barnes.

Aldi recently overtook The Co-op to claim its place as the UK’s fifth biggest supermarket and now boasts almost 7 per cent of the market share in the country. It is still way behind market leader Tesco which has 28 per cent of the market share, but has announced massive recruitment plans at a time when Tesco is making around 1,000 cost-saving redundancies.

Aldi says it received 900,000 new customers into its stores last year and claims to be the UK’s highest paying supermarket, with staff on a minimum of £8.53 per hour in most places but with London employees receiving at least £9.75 an hour.
