Subway To Create 5,000 New UK & Ireland Jobs Before 2020

Subway, the sandwich franchise chain, has announced plans to expand its outlets in the UK and Ireland by 500, leading to approximately 5,000 new jobs before the end of 2020.

The expansion will increase their UK & Ireland footprint by 20 percent over the next three years, taking them from around 2,500 branches at the moment to around 3,000 once the new Subways are all up and running.

An average of 10 new full and part time jobs are created with each new Subway outlet, meaning that 5,000 vacancies will be created by the franchiser over the course of the next three and a half years.

The first round of expansion could see as many as 150 new Subway branches popping up across the high streets of the UK and Ireland this year, leading to a possible 1,500 vacancies being advertised before the end of 2017.

Commenting on the expansion plans, Subway’s Country Director for the UK & Ireland, Peter Dowding, said:

“The growth expansion has been continual. What we have achieved over the last few years has been phenomenal for the brand and for our franchisees across the UK and Ireland. We set some very ambitious targets in 2012, where we said we would get 3,000 stores by 2020 and we are well on our way to achieving that.”

“In fact, we will be opening our 2,500th store, which is a fantastic achievement for the brand in the UK. It strengthens our position in the market as being the leading quick service chain in the UK.”

“With 5,000 new jobs expected over the next three years, opening up a further 500 stores demonstrates not only the value of the business to our franchisees but also collectively, the real and significant contribution to British and Irish economies,” added Mr Dowding.

Subway has long since overtaken McDonald’s as the world’s largest fast food chain and is now worth over £5 billion. In the UK & Ireland alone, the chain has a turnover in excess of £500 million and employs close to 20,000 people in full and part time roles.

Worldwide, Subway, which was founded in the mid 1960s in Connecticut, USA, now operates in over 100 countries, serving up their famous ‘Subs’ from more than 40,000 branches.
