Aussie Homebase Owner To Create 1,000 New UK Jobs

Bunnings, the Australian owner of the Homebase chain of DIY stores, has announced a trial expansion plan which will create up to 1,000 new full or part time jobs in the UK.

The company has doubled its plans to roll out pilot stores from 10 new outlets to 20, and says that it will continue to rebrand existing Homebase stores with their own Bunnings brand instead.

The expansion plans have been boosted by positive feedback from customers at the first two Bunnings pilot warehouses at first pilot stores in St Albans and Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire.

The third Bunnings warehouse opened in Milton Keynes yesterday, and the three pilot stores have already created more than 200 hundred jobs. A further 17 Bunnings’ outlets will be added this year creating 800 more full or part time jobs, with an average of around 50 vacancies created by each new opening.

PJ Davis, managing director at Bunnings, said: “Our decision to extend the pilot programme reflects the positive reaction we’ve seen from customers to the stores we’ve opened so far. Increasing the number of pilot stores to 20 will give us the opportunity to test the concept in new geographies, with different demographics, across a range of store sizes.”

“We are determined to combine the best of Bunnings Warehouse with what UK consumers want. The success of the pilots still remains a precursor to additional investment,” added Mr Davis.

Welcoming the announcement, Mark Garnier, International Trade Minister said: “This is a significant and welcome investment by Bunnings. It will create hundreds of jobs, providing security to families across the country.”

“The Department for International Trade works with companies around the world to promote the strengths of the UK and this investment from Bunnings is yet another endorsement of the UK's attractiveness to overseas investors. We will work with them and others to help fulfil their ambitions in the UK,” added Mr Garnier.
