Revealed: Graduates Job Sectors With Best Starting Salaries

New research by jobs board CV-Library has revealed the sectors where graduates can expect to earn the highest starting salaries.

The study, which took over 5,000 graduate job ads into consideration, found that the average starting salary across all graduate sectors is now around £25,000 but that the difference between the highest paid sectors and the lowest paid sectors can be as large as £18,000.

Graduates entering into the Media sector could anticipate an average starting salary of over £34,000, compared to a graduate going into the Charity sector starting out on just £16,000.

Here are the top and bottom five graduate sectors with their average starting salaries in brackets...

Top 5 Sectors for Graduate Starting Salaries:

  1. Media - (£34,244)

  2. Construction - (£29,530)

  3. Administration - (£29,007)

  4. Legal - (£28,030)

  5. Education - (£27,848)

Bottom 5 Sectors for Graduate Starting Salaries:

  1. Charities - (£16,075)

  2. Customer - (£19,948)

  3. Marketing - (£20,558)

  4. Medical - (£21,709)

  5. Tourism - (£21,901)

Commenting on the findings, Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: “It’s interesting to see that certain sectors are offering far higher starting salaries than others, though not entirely surprising. Some of these industries, such as construction, law and education, require specific skill-sets and qualifications, for example.”

“But, there could also be an explanation for some of the other sectors. With the media industry, for example, a lot of graduate positions can be commercial, rather than creative or editorial, which often come with a higher pay package,” added Mr Biggins.
