EE To Create 800 New Jobs & Apprenticeships In The UK

EE, the mobile phone operator owned by the BT Group, is on a recruitment drive which will see the firm create around 800 new full or part time jobs in the UK.

The North East is set to be a major beneficiary of the EE jobs boost, with over half of all of the new call centre vacancies to be posted in the region. Darlington will see 150 new jobs, North Shields will add 185 staff and Sunderland will get 90 extra positions, creating over 400 jobs in the North East.

EE is already a massive provider of jobs in the North East, employing 2,000 staff in Darlington alone. Last year the mobile phone company took on 260 new staff in the North East and is continuing to grow it employees in the region this year.

Other places set to benefit from the latest EE recruitment drive are Plymouth in England, Merthyr Tydfil in Wales and Greenock in Scotland.

Explaining why the company is taking on so many new call centre staff, Chief Executive of EE, Marc Allera, said: “Our customers want great 4G coverage, and great customer service, no matter where they are, and we’ve been working non-stop to give them both. We’re recruiting new talent, providing great opportunities through our apprentice scheme and creating entirely new jobs for the UK economy that will help ensure our customers have a great experience, whether they speak to us on the phone, in our stores, or online.”

“We’re also proud to be continuing to support the UK jobs market and providing the platform for our staff and incoming apprentices to gain skills and build long and successful careers with us,” added Mr Allera.

Since launching its apprenticeship scheme five years ago, EE has hired more than 1,300 apprentices and will have a further 100 apprenticeships up for grabs this year. EE also features in The Sunday Times’ Best Companies to Work For list.

Commenting on the Merthyr Tydfil roles in particular, Ken Skates, the Cabinet secretary for economy & infrastructure, said: “I am delighted that EE will be recruiting an additional 60 new advisers to its contact centre in Merthyr. This is excellent news for the local economy, particularly given EE’s commitment to training and developing its staff and supporting them to progress and build long term careers.”
