The Range, the home, leisure and garden retailer, has announced plans to open a new head office and superstore in Plymouth, a move which would create almost 600 full or part time jobs in the Devon city.

The Range already has its head office in the Estover area of Plymouth but has outgrown those premises. There are currently around 250 staff at the Estover offices, but the new head office, subject to planning permission but set to be located at the former Ministry of Defence’s Seaton Barracks site, could hold up to 700 employees.

It is estimated that around 450 new jobs would be created by the move to bigger offices in Plymouth and the roles would be a mix of typical head office positions such as IT, finance and marketing.

A further 120 Plymouth jobs could be created by the opening of a The Range superstore next to the new head office in the city too. In total, the relocation and expansion could add 570 jobs to the economy of Plymouth.

The Range now has over 120 outlets in the UK, but Plymouth was where the retail success story started, with the first store opening in the city in 1989.

Commenting on why he still wanted the new headquarters to be based in Plymouth, owner of The Range, Chris Dawson, said: “It was always very important for me to keep our head office operations in our home city and the place that CDS The Range started. I have staff that have worked for the company for over 20 years so having a new office built just down the road from the current office is a big deal to all of us.”

“Having the new Superstore next to our head office also means that it can be used as a training academy and centre of excellence so that Range staff from across the UK can some down to Plymouth and be trained to the highest standards,” added Mr Dawson.
