Deptford Green secondary school, in Lewisham, London, has reported on the positive results of its pilot scheme which allows students to develop the skills they need to be involved in the way that their education is taught to them.

The students as researchers (Stars) project, which was first established in 2003 as part of the school's Citizenship course, allowed students to practice their teamwork skills and learn about research project design, ethics, methods, data analysis and evaluation.

"Students are key stakeholders in education. It is important that they have a voice in school life. It was often difficult to take some of the students’ ideas forward as the requests were not researched enough. To give students a more direct impact on the school, students as researchers (Stars) was created," explained David Lucas, leader of the scheme, in a report written for the school management.

"They would be given the skills and information that would enable them to undertake the research, make recommendations and finally see what effect the research has made in school life."

The Stars project allows the students to dictate lesson plans, using their motivation to investigate areas of change that they would like to see. According to the school, evidence from the students themselves shows that they view Stars work as something that can help them to make a real difference.
