Co-op To Create 1,500 New Supermarket Jobs In The UK

The Co-op chain is to embark upon an aggressive expansion plan which will see it adding 100 new stores in the UK, creating up to 1,500 supermarket jobs in the process.

Dozens of new Co-op supermarkets and convenience stores will be added in 2017 at various locations in Scotland, Yorkshire, Swansea, London and other parts of South East England. The £70 million expansion throughout next year will create hundreds of full and part time jobs in each region.

In London alone, Co-op plans to open five new supermarkets in the next three months and will continue to launch further new outlets around the capital throughout the year.

Setting out the stall for the chain, Co-operative Group’s Property Portfolio & Development Director, Stuart Hookins, said: “Whilst other retailers are scaling back their expansion plans, the Co-op continues to open new convenience stores. We opened 100 stores in 2016, and we plan to open hundreds more new stores over the next few years.”

In Scotland, the Co-op plans to create 250 supermarket jobs with the opening of 20 outlets at an investment of around £11 million during 2017, including new ventures in Edinburgh and Gretna. After opening 15 new supermarkets north of the border during 2016, the expansion in Scotland next year will see the company’s ranks swell to 5,700 employees in the country by the end of 2017.

Commenting on the new Scottish jobs to be created in the coming months, managing director of Co-op, John McNeill, said, “Our long history of investment here, coupled with our plans for 2017, reaffirms our commitment to Scottish communities the length and breadth of the country. 2016 has already seen us grow our footprint right across Scotland with major new stores opening in areas such as Bearsden, Kirkcaldy, Laurencekirk and Peterculter.”

“With a store in every postal area, we're conveniently placed to serve the needs of today's consumers whether they're in the Highlands and Islands or the busy urban centres of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen. We're investing in our people and our products so that our customers can rely on a consistently great in-store experience,” added Mr McNeill.
