Lidl To Create 5,000 Jobs In London

German budget supermarket chain Lidl has announced £70 million investment plans for a new headquarters in the UK’s capital, a move which will create 5,000 jobs in London.

The new London offices in Kingston are still subject to planning permission being granted, but will form part of a wider three year spend of £1.5 billion in the capital. During that time, Lidl plans to open 250 new stores, creating thousands of jobs in the process. Nationwide, Lidl has ambitions to double its UK locations to more than 1,500 supermarkets across the country.

The London jobs are in addition to the 500 jobs in Doncaster which Lidl announced earlier this month and the 400 jobs in Southampton which we brought you news of at the start of November.

Lidl’s current London headquarters are in Wimbledon, where the German company has been based for eighteen years. The 450 staff working there will move to the new Kingston offices once they are ready.

Board director at Lidl in the UK, Ingo Fischer, said: “Our new headquarters not only signify an investment in our own infrastructure and workforce, but also highlight our wider investment ambitions within London as Lidl UK continues to experience incredible growth.”

“Once the planning commitments have been agreed with Kingston, the consent will be referred to the Mayor’s Office to be concluded. We hope to receive the Mayor of London’s feedback and to progress with the plans early in the new year,” added Mr Fischer.

Commenting on the Lidl announcement, Councillor Kevin Davis, Leader of Kingston Council, said: "We welcome what is one of the biggest investments in London this year coming to Tolworth. It will act as a foundation stone for the regeneration of the wider area.”

“This is not only good for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames but also demonstrates that a forward-thinking council, working with a supportive Mayor, can deliver a post-Brexit London that is open for business,” added Councillor Davis.

By the time all of the Lidl jobs in London, Doncaster and Southampton are filled, the supermarket chain will employ around 25,000 members of staff in full and part time roles in the UK.
