Up to 70 per cent of employees admit that they have lied on their CV, according to a new survey.

A further 60 per cent say they have lied within a job interview, showing that candidates are barely any more honest at interview.

And guilt does not seem to be kicking in, with 80 per cent of employees saying they would lie again to enhance their career prospects.

In addition, almost 70 per cent say that they believe they were successful at their job interview because they lied.

The employment law consultancy, Peninsular, questioned 1,476 workers from different industries across the country.

Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula, said: "More and more job candidates for new positions are lying on their CV to gain an increased chance at being considered for a better job, sought after by many.

"With the growth in salaries and the requirement for a better lifestyle for many, a CV can be a perfect opportunity to bring attention to the best out of a group of applicants," he added.

Increasingly employers are carrying out background checks on candidates by looking at their personal blogs or web pages on social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace.

A good CV is crucial for graduates looking to make their first step on the employment ladder and impress potential employers.
