Google To Create 3,000 Jobs In London

Google has announced plans to expand its London headquarters at King's Cross in a move which it says could create up to 3,000 new jobs in the UK.

The new building, to be constructed on Pancras Square, will be owned and designed by the tech giant. It will be over 60,000 square metres and span 10 floors, and, in combination with their other two offices in King’s Cross, will create enough space for an eventual 7,000 members of staff in London.

The 3,000 new London jobs which Google announced most recently will be added before the end of 2020, with building work set to get under way on the new offices some time in 2018. The search engine firm already employs 4,000 people in London, but the announcement of thousands more jobs in the next four years represents a firm commitment to the UK’s capital.

Commenting on the move in to London offices, Google chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said “In the UK, it’s clear to me that computer science has a great future with the talent, educational institutions and passion for innovation. That’s why we’re investing in London in both engineering talent and infrastructure.”

“The UK has been a tremendous market for us. We see big opportunities here. This is a big commitment from us — we have some of the best talent in the world in the UK and to be able to build great products from here sets us up well for the long term.”

“We plan to start construction in 2018, and when complete we'll have more than a million square feet of space across three offices in the King’s Cross campus - enough for more than 7,000 employees,” added Mr Pichai.

London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, welcomed the news, saying, “This is a vote of confidence in our great city - creating high-skilled jobs, supporting growth and demonstrating that London is open to business, new investment and talent from around the globe.”

“London is one the world's leading technology hubs and investment into the capital post-Brexit remains robust. Google's expansion will further strengthen our city's reputation as a global leader in digital technology,” added Mr Khan.

Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, also welcomed the Google announcement, saying: “Our technology industry is central to securing future economic growth and this government is committed to ensuring it continues to thrive. It's further proof that Britain is open for business and that we continue to be an outward looking, world-leading nation.”
