The Antrim retail park, Junction One, is to receive a £30 million redevelopment in a move which owners say will create around 500 new full and part time retail jobs in Northern Ireland.

The redevelopment is subject to planning permission which is to be submitted soon. The application will be considered next year, and, if granted, the redevelopment of Junction One could be complete before the end of 2018.

New bosses say that Junction One has been neglected over the past few years, leading to 1 in 4 premises currently empty at the park. The new owners say that they will bring 20 new businesses to Junction One, taking the number of retailers, cafes and other tenants at the site to around 100 in total.

Junction One is now owned by The Lotus Group. The company’s asset and property management director, Alastair Coulson, was upbeat about the future of the Antrim retail park, saying:

“We are talking to bulky good suppliers, multi-national restaurant operators for food and beverages, and we are talking to those in the cafe and coffee shop market, as well as targeting retailers. We are very confident we can turn it around. Junction One has struggled over the last five years because of a lack of investment.”

“We are building new gateway buildings at the entrance on the way in, a higher-end architectural finish to set the scene. By the cinema, we are putting in a couple of new restaurants and drive-through pods to increase the night time economy,”added Mr Coulson.

It is hoped that the revamp will lead to greater visitor numbers and increase headcount by around 50 percent at Junction One, taking staffing levels from around 1,000 members of staff to somewhere in the region of 1,500 in the coming years.
