Newcastle Borough Council has passed plans for an extension to New Look’s North Staffordshire distribution hub in a move which will create around 200 full and part time jobs in the city.

Demand for New Look’s online offering is soaring, meaning that the retailer needs to expand its facilities to keep up with customers e-commerce orders.

Over peak periods of trading, such as the upcoming Christmas holidays and January sales, New Look employs around 1,400 members of staff at its Lymedale site in Newcastle, but, over the course of the next two years, bosses expect staffing levels to rise closer to 1,700 full or part time employees at the facility.

The new extension will take just over six months to complete, bringing dozens of new warehouse jobs and other roles to Newcastle.

Councillor John Williams, a member of the planning committee which approved the proposals this week, said, “These jobs are needed and there is the commitment by the company to extend in the area. The company is attracting more business and everyone wanted to accept the planning application.”

Sara Williams, the chief executive of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, welcomed the announcement, saying: “North Staffordshire is at the heart of the country with great transport links and experienced professionals. It is always exciting to be able to welcome new jobs to the area.”

A spokesperson for New Look said: “The extension of the warehouse is crucial to the New Look business and will provide expansion space for the growth of e-commerce. The e-commerce side of the business continues to grow beyond expectation and the UK retail business continues to grow year on year.”

“The current capacity of the Lymedale site will soon be outgrown and it is predicted that the current capacity will have been exceeded by more than 20 per cent by 2020. The extension is expected to generate 200 new employment opportunities over the next two years and will ensure the continued investment year on year by New Look,” added the spokesperson.
