Lidl Creating 400 New Southampton Jobs

Lidl, the German budget supermarket chain, has announced plans for a new £55 million distribution centre which will create up to 400 new full or part time jobs in Southampton.

The new facility close to junction 2 of the M271 in Southampton will be Lidl’s tenth distribution centre in the UK, with two others in Exeter and Wednesbury almost ready for action.

The investment in the 39,000 square metre Southampton distribution centre is part of a wider plan to spend £1.5 billion in the United Kingdom over the next three years.

Lidl’s share of the UK market is now almost close to five per cent and the company is still expanding to new parts of the country, with sales growing by over eight per cent in the last twelve months. The chain now has over 640 supermarket in Britain

Commenting on the announcement, Lidl UK’s regional director, Marco Ivone, said: “The opening of our new Southampton RDC marks an incredibly exciting time for the business, particularly in the south.”

“Not only is it necessary to accommodate the scale of our existing and future operations in the area, we have been able to create significant job opportunities as a result of the new warehouse and will continue to invest in the south as we move forward with our expansion plans,” added Mr Ivone.
