ulan launches journalism course with bbc
02-Aug-2007

Ulan launches journalism course with BBC The University of Central Lancashire (UClan) is partnering with the BBC to launch a new course for budding journalists who feel they are under-qualified for the profession.

The one year foundation course will furnish students with knowledge of basic skills in journalism such as uncovering and identifying stories and how to tell a story effectively.

It will also give the basics on putting together material to go online, or for a radio or television broadcast.

Those who gain a place on the course will be based at UCLan's Preston campus but will also receive a mentor at the BBC centre in Blackburn.

No qualifications are needed. Once students pass the foundation course they will move on to study for a journalism degree in UCLan.

Mike Ward, head of UCLan's journalism department, said: "We are delighted to be working so closely with the BBC on the development of this exciting new course.

"This course is aimed at those who never thought a career as a journalist was within their grasp. The message it sends out is 'it can be'."

The managing editor of BBC Radio Lancashire, John Clayton, added: "This is the first course of its kind in the country to be run jointly by the BBC and a university."

BBC Radio Lancashire is hosting two open days at its drop-in centre in Darwen Street, Blackburn, on August 16th and 23rd 2007 between 10:00 and 14:00 BST for people who would like to find out more.
