Amazon UK is to create 1,500 Christmas jobs at its fulfilment centre in Manchester as it gears up for an anticipated record period of trading over the 2016 holidays.

The new staff will join 1,000 permanent workers at Amazon’s massive warehouse near the North West city’s airport which is located in the Wythenshawe area.

If the new Amazon Christmas recruits impress bosses at the fulfilment centre then some of the seasonal jobs could convert into permanent positions once the busy Christmas and New Year holidays are over.

Recruitment is already underway for the Manchester Christmas vacancies at Amazon and successful applicants will receive an initial wage of £7.55 an hour, plus benefits and staff discount.

Commenting on the recruitment drive for staff, John Tagawa, the vice president of UK operations said: “We look forward to welcoming back the people who join us each and every Christmas, as well as many new faces who will be joining the Amazon team for the first time.”

“As we continue to grow our network, there will be opportunities for people who join us in seasonal roles to transfer to permanent positions,” promised Mr Tagawa.

Last Christmas, Amazon hired around 19,000 seasonal staff for their holiday period and is expected to top that number this year with an expected 20,000 festive vacancies up for grabs around the UK.
