Developments to the Sheffield Retail Quarter could create over 4,700 temporary and permanent jobs in the city according to the council.

The plans for new shops and offices in the Barker’s Pool, Pinstone Street and Charter Square area of the city centre will come at an investment of £480 million but would create thousands of construction vacancies and retail jobs in Sheffield.

The council says that over 1,200 full time temporary jobs will be created during the construction phase and that a further 2,500 full or part time jobs would be generated at staggered intervals throughout the development and after its completion.

In total, the overhaul of Sheffield Retail Quarter is estimated to create 4,779 jobs, of which the majority will filled by the city’s residents.

A report on the proposals highlights some of the benefits the developments would bring to the Yorkshire city:

“[The Sheffield Retail Quarter] will have a beneficial impact on the local construction sector, generating employment and reducing income deprivation in the short-term. In the longer term employment will be generated through the provision of new commercial floorspace.”

“We know that there is capacity in the local labour market and the population is well educated. It includes a young student population that will benefit from short-term, flexible jobs. To further enhance the employment opportunities for local people, it is expected that an employment and training strategy will be developed with the city council, covering both the construction and operational phases of the development.”
