A new retail park is set to create up to 250 jobs in Scotland as planning permission is granted for the development in Cumbernauld.

50 of the jobs will be temporary vacancies generated in the construction of the £25 million retail development. The other 200 positions will be permanent retail vacancies and hospitality jobs at the completed project which is to be overseen by developers L&S Broadwood.

The Cumbernauld retail park will consist of seven retail units, a drive-thru coffee shop and a pub. There will also be a petrol station and over 600 parking spaces at the site once it is completed.

Aldi, Home Bargains and M&S Simply Food have already signed up as tenants at the Cumbernauld retail park, but the other four retail units are yet to be filled. Starbucks is in negotiations to take on drive-thru coffee shop but there are no agreed tenants yet for the pub or the petrol station, although discussion are underway to fill those too before work gets started at the site later in the year.

L&S Broadwood’s development director, Bryan Wilson, said: “We believe this local neighbourhood centre will be a tremendous asset for the people living on the other side of the M80 who currently have very few local amenities. It will give them top High Street brands on their doorstep and provide a real focus for their community.”

“We are grateful to the members of the planning committee for giving us the green light for our proposals. We hope to have shovels in the ground later this year, with a view to start trading in around 18 months’ time,” added Mr Wilson.
