Sainsbury’s To Create 900 Jobs With Speedy Delivery Roll Out

Sainsbury’s is to create up to 900 new full or part time jobs as it rolls out a faster delivery service which will see online shoppers receive their goods on the same day.

The second biggest supermarket chain in the UK will trial the same-day delivery service at three stores in the coming weeks, and, if it proves popular they will roll it out across dozens more supermarkets in the run up to the Christmas holidays.

The first three Sainsbury’s to give access to the service will be at Richmond and Streatham Common in London, and at Brookwood in Surrey.

The hundreds of vacancies created by the enhancement of their delivery service will all be based at their yet-to-be completed Bromley-by-Bow online fulfilment centre in East London. 470 jobs will be advertised in the initial phase before Autumn, with a further 430 jobs to be filled in the next three to four years.

The new speedy delivery service will mean that online shoppers who order before midday will have their goods delivered to their door by 6pm in the evening on the same day. Alternatively, customers can order online by midday, and choose to pick up their own items from the store from 4pm onwards.

Robbie Feather, Online Director for Sainsbury’s said demand was strong for their delivery service, especially in the capital.

“We expect this trend to continue as more and more customers enjoy the flexibility of multi-channel shopping using our groceries website and app, in addition to visiting stores. Our online orders are currently picked from supermarket stores across the UK and this model will continue, but the Bromley-by-Bow centre will help us keep pace with demand in London, enabling us to fulfil another 25,000 orders per week,” said Mr Feather.

“This is a natural next step in delivering our strategy to help customers shop whenever and wherever they want,” added the Online Director.
