A national children's mobility charity is taking steps forward to make sure disabled students get access to the best work experience schemes.

Whizz-Kidz is working with successful businesses to make sure young disabled people use work experience schemes to become "switched-on, skilled-up and ready to take on a challenge".

The charity has identified a number of areas where disabled students can make an impact in work experience and the job market. This includes establishing yourself as a valuable asset, working together to make a difference and aiming high for the best companies around.

Ruth Owen, chief executive of Whizz-Kidz, explained the thought process behind the scheme and what she hopes it will achieve.

She told OnRec: "We want to ensure that disabled children and young people have the same opportunities as their non-disabled friends to achieve their full potential in life. Providing the right mobility equipment early in life is just one part of the jigsaw.

Debra Jones is head of corporate social responsibility at Tesco and explained why the company's partnership with Whizz-Kidz had been so fruitful.

She said: "Our charity of the year partnership with Whizz-Kidz has really inspired us to sustain our relationship by implementing a programme of work placements for young disabled people in different parts of our business.

"Weve been impressed by how Whizz-Kidz has managed our partnership and are delighted to be offering young people the chance to develop essential new skills in the workplace."
