Law students are more likely to achieve three As at A level but find the pace harder work at university as they are less likely to achieve first degrees than students in other subjects, a new study suggests.

Figures compiled by Real World magazine for the Recruiters' Guide to Courses and Campuses - Law Report show that only eight per cent of students from Russell Group universities reading law were awarded first class degrees.

A gender divide was apparent also with women deemed more likely to outperform men in law degrees – some two third of law graduates are now female.

The study discovered that 58 per cent of women were awarded 2:1s or firsts compared to 52 per cent of men.

Darius Norell, Real World magazine founder, said: "This [report] highlights the difficulties in trying to compare degree results from different disciplines. Employers need to be aware of the wide discrepancies that exist in order to run a fair recruitment process."

Law has been a traditional industry area for high flying graduates a recent survey showing partner earning at the Magic Circle law firms topping the £1 million mark.
