Sainsbury’s has announced that it will be creating around 150 IT jobs in Manchester before the end of 2017.

The supermarket chain is to open a new tech hub in the North West city’s Arndale Centre, where the firm already has a Store Support Centre, creating dozens of new technology and digital jobs in the process.

Sainsbury’s already employs around 900 people on the digital and technology side of its business, but wants to further improve its services as it tries to gain advantage on digital rivals such as Amazon, Tesco and John Lewis. Over the last twelve months, Sainsbury’s has already doubled it tech and digital headcount, adding 480 new positions in Coventry and London.

Over the next eighteen months, Sainsbury’s will now advertise a range of new IT positions for DevOps engineers, software developers, agile coaches and related roles in Manchester.

Digital and technology director for Sainsbury’s, Jon Rudoe, explained the move: “The world is changing rapidly. Our vision is for Sainsbury’s to have a world-class digital and technology function to ensure that we can deliver great services for our customers whenever and wherever they want to shop with us.”

“This announcement demonstrates our commitment to that goal and to attracting the best talent in this ever-developing sector. As Manchester is the UK’s second largest technology hub, it’s a natural step for us to recruit here. It’s a great time to be working in retail. This fast-paced, exciting sector is giving rise to the most innovative practices,” added Mr Rudoe.
