Amazon is to open a new fulfilment centre in Coalville which will create around 500 new full or part time Leicestershire jobs before the end of 2019.

The 500 new jobs at the Leicestershire distribution hub, set to open later this year, are part of a wider move for Amazon to take on 2,500 more staff in the UK in the next few years.

The Coalville Amazon fulfilment centre, to be housed in the Mountpark Bardon industrial & logistics area, will cover an area of 1 million square feet and will generate an average of around 14 new Leicestershire jobs a month over the course of the next three years. It will take Amazon’s tally of UK fulfilment centres to 11 as the hugely successful online retailer further improves its delivery services across the nation.

Announcing the Coalville fulfilment centre, Operations Vice-President of Amazon UK, John Tagawa, said: “We are excited to create 500 new permanent jobs over three years in Leicestershire with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one. Amazon has a dedicated and enthusiastic workforce who play a crucial role in delivering a first-rate level of service for our customers and we look forward to recruiting people from Leicestershire and the surrounding area.”

Commenting on the announcement, North West Leicestershire MP, Andrew Bridgen, said: “I welcome Amazon’s investment in North West Leicestershire along with its potential for 500 jobs. North West Leicestershire continues to be an area good for business and long-term investment and we are currently enjoying one of the highest economic growth rates outside London and the South East. I am pleased that such a reputable company has the confidence in the area not only given its strategic location but also for the recruitment of a wide ranging work force.”
