chance for scottish grads
30-Jul-2007

Chance for Scottish grads Businesses in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland are taking part in a scheme designed to provide graduate jobs.

The Graduates for Business programme, run by Scottish Enterprise, is a new recruitment initiative which should help firms fill vacancies and assist graduates in gaining valuable job experience.

Unlike many work experience schemes, the programme pays a minimum salary of £14,000 to those involved.

Vacancies exist across all sectors of business - and graduates are usually assigned to specific projects lasting three to 12 months.

Some 65 per cent of placements translate into full time graduate careers at the end of their project.

Stuart Dixon, Scottish Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway operations director, said: "The great thing about this programme is it creates genuine graduate calibre jobs in the area and gives local companies the resources to grow their businesses without an expensive and risky recruitment process."

One graduate who was given his first chance by the scheme was Robert Burton.

He joined Process Plant and Machinery after leaving Heriot-Watt University and was involved in the sourcing, refurbishment, engineering and installation of plant and equipment.

He said: "This project has allowed me to put theory into practice and apply my skills to real life situations - which makes a welcome change from the artificially-created cases and environments we have to work with at university."
