The number of temporary jobs in finance has risen by over a third on the same time last year, according to new figures from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (Apsco).

Apsco research shows a steep rise in both finance and accountancy jobs in the UK, with permanent positions up 16 percent and temporary vacancies up 34 percent. Across the wider spectrum of professional jobs, the market has improved 6 percent on twelve months ago, painting a positive outlook for the future of the sector.

Salaries for people working in finance are also surging, with banking jobs wages up over 18 percent and financial services positions now paying almost 11 percent more than the same time last year.

Commenting on the number of temporary vacancies up for grabs in the finance and accountancy sector, chief executive of Apsco, Ann Swain, said: “Whereas historically, many organisations may have thought of temporary workers as people to hold the fort during an absence, the reality is that the professional flexible workforce is now ‘the new normal’ – a trend that we predict will continue into 2016.”

And stressing that the rise in finance vacancies was not exclusive to London, Ms Swain added: “The fact that banking roles are increasing outside of the capital is in line with what many of our members are telling us, as financial services companies increasingly look to establish business in regions across the UK.”

Although the finance jobs market in London is still very strong, cities such as Manchester and Birmingham are also now seeing a renaissance in the sector, and, nationwide, the British Bankers’ Association says that almost 2,500 new jobs have been created outside of the capital in the last two calendar years.
