Changes in medical training have meant that junior doctors all over the country will begin their graduate careers on the same day.

Over 30,000 junior doctors are expected to take up new posts tomorrow.

Under the previous training system, the take-up of junior doctor posts was staggered throughout the year.

Concerns have been expressed that the huge and sudden influx of relatively inexperienced doctors into the system will lead to inconvenience for patients and a lowering of treatment standards.

The British Medical Association (BMA) has done its best to calm concerns.

In a recent statement, it said: "The large number of doctors starting new jobs does not in itself mean that there will be an impact on patient safety.

"The vast majority of doctors are dedicated professionals who will never neglect their patients - their poor treatment at the hands of this system does not mean they will work to a lower standard."

However, Matthew Shaw, co-founder of the pressure group RemedyUK, said: "After abandoning the broken computer system trusts have been forced to recruit at the last minute, leaving some hospitals without doctors in key posts.

"Consultants contacting us are also concerned about the quality of candidates being recruited in the last-minute jobs scramble.

"Many are afraid to speak out publicly about their concerns for fear of professional reprisal."
