students enjoy gardening success

Students enjoy gardening success A group of students from Otley College have won recognition for their gardening abilities.

The green fingered group picked up a National Skills Challenge gold medal for a garden creation.

TV gardener Chris Beardshaw had given the team some advice before it went on to pick up the gong at the UK Landscape National Skills competition.

Winning team-members included Simon Ginger, William Gadd, Richard Miller and Craig George.

They are all currently studying for a National Diploma in Horticulture at Otley College.

Now Mr Beadshaw is hoping to guest lecture at Otley college next year, according to EADT 24.

His partnership with the school developed after Otley's landscape and garden design lecturer Jody Lidgard came second out of 64 contestants in Channel 4's The Great Gardening Challenge last year.

Mr Beardshaw was quoted by EADT 24 as saying: "Gardening is my passion and I am delighted to be working with Otley.

"The college has a long tradition of teaching landscape and garden design courses and lecturing is still a part of life that I love."

Ms Lidgard added: "The fact that we scooped top honours at the National Skills Challenge is a credit to our students and proves that they are using the knowledge that they have gained in a positive way".

Last week pupils at Norwich high school received a Tudor Rose award at the Growing Schools Garden Project Ceremony at Hampton Court for their garden of vegetables, fruits, herbs and medicinal plants.
