Almost 40% Of UK Companies To Offer Summer Jobs

Almost 40 per cent of companies will offer summer jobs in the UK this year, according to a new survey by CareerBuilder.co.uk.

And, of the 2 in 5 firms which say they will recruit this summer, around 80 per cent say that the holiday jobs could develop into permanent positions for the right sort of staff.

The Career Builder findings are the result of a survey of more than 400 UK companies, of which over 150 said that they planned to advertise summer roles this year. Furthermore, over 120 of the UK companies surveyed said that they would ‘consider’ converting temporary staff into permanent members of staff after the summer.

The temporary summer job roles which will be on offer are quite varied, with customer service positions expected to offer the largest number of opportunities. Other business areas which will add to their staffing levels over the summer include restaurant jobs, office support & admin, IT, research, sales, construction, manufacturing, hospitality & leisure and engineering.

Commenting on the survey results, Scott Helmes, CareerBuilder UK’s Managing Director, said: “Although the jobs recovery has been slow, our findings show ample opportunities for those looking for seasonal work. Seasonal work can be a great gateway to long-term employment. Not only are many employers open to bringing summer hires on for permanent positions, but seasonal work is also an excellent way to gain new skills and experience and connect with people who could be great references later on.”

Offering some advice to anyone who wants to convert a temporary summer job into a permanent opportunity, Mr Helmes said: “With a little initiative, a lot of hard work and some outstanding effort, workers may be able to turn their seasonal job into a permanent one. Our research shows that almost half of employers thought that seasonal workers being proactive in asking for more responsibility or work and by making an effort to fit in would increase their chances of securing a permanent role.”

Summer jobs are a fantastic way to build up money and work experience over the holidays - and they can also be a lot of fun too. Not all summer jobs mean you’ll be cooped up inside all the time either; there are loads of outdoor summer jobs in the UK, with summer marquee rigger jobs being just one example.
