Co-op Food To Create 700 New UK Supermarket Jobs

Co-operative Food has announced plans for 100 new convenience stores in the UK, a move which will create around 700 new full and part time supermarket jobs.

A quarter of the new Co-op Food stores will be opened north of the border, creating around 200 jobs in Scotland alone.

The other 75 new stores will create an average of over 6 jobs per supermarket, meaning the company will generate a further 500 full and part time jobs in other parts of the UK this year. Around 50 of the new smaller-format Co-op convenience stores will be located in the South East of England, so many of the new supermarket jobs at the firm will be advertised in this region.

The Co-op Group had a disastrous financial year in 2013, indeed it almost collapsed, but has now returned to profit and seems to be on the up and up.

Explaining the reversal of fortunes at Co-op Food, Richard Pennycook, chief executive, said: “We made solid progress in 2014 as we successfully concluded the rescue phase of our turnaround. The hard work of rebuilding the Co-operative Group for the next generation, and restoring it to its rightful place at the heart of communities up and down the UK, is now underway.

“Our core businesses continued to deliver for customers, with their financial performances reflecting challenging trading conditions across all of our markets and the different stages they are each at in terms of rebuild,” added Mr Pennycook.

By the end of this year, and after its current round of expansion, Co-op will have over 2,850 UK stores and will employ more than 60,000 people in a variety of roles. More than 2 in 3 of Co-op Food’s stores are the smaller-format convenience supermarkets, and the firm looks set to increase that ratio even more going forward.
