Barclays To Create 200 Call Centre Jobs In Sunderland

Barclays bank is set to create 200 more Sunderland jobs as it extends its operations at a call centre in the North East city.

Barclays needs hundreds of new call centre operatives to help it keep fraud at bay in an increasingly online world. The bank will expand its headcount at Sunderland’s Doxford International Business Park by just over 13 per cent, taking its staffing levels in the city to around 1,700 full and part time employees.

Recruitment for the new call centre jobs at Barclays will get underway imminently, but the positions are not expected to be opened until refurbishment at Doxford is completed in June. Some jobs will be filled by early summer, but recruitment will continue for a range of call centre staff, team leaders and managerial positions throughout the rest of 2015, as the firm reshores jobs from overseas.

Overall the call centre industry accounts for more than 10,000 full and part time jobs in Sunderland, making the sector a major contributor to the city’s economy.

The announcement comes just a few weeks after Barclays revealed in February that their new 24 hour face-to-face video customer service banking facility for smartphones, tablets and PCs would create 100 new Sunderland jobs at the business park.

Dave Smith, Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council, praised the bank’s announcement, saying: “Barclays is a shining success story for Sunderland and I am delighted that the bank has chosen the city as the base for its new fraud detection centre. The creation of at least 200 jobs, coming hot on the heels of the 100 positions created for video banking, is great news for the city's economy.”

Sunderland site president for Barclays, Christine Allenson, explained that the surge in use of mobile and online banking was leading to an increase in fraud and attempted fraud cases across the industry.

“These new jobs are in response to customers telling us how they want to be dealt with when there is fraud. We want to be one step ahead at all times and make sure that our customers' money is as safe as possible,” said Mrs Allenson.

Giving details on what sort of candidates Barclays would be trying to track down in this current round of recruitment for the Sunderland call centre vacancies, Mrs Allenson said:

“We are looking for people with life experience who are able to really connect with customers during what can be a difficult and emotional time, when there is suspected fraud on their account. The new opportunities are available for both existing and new to Barclays staff and we’re hugely excited to be able to offer a whole new range of career opportunities across the Sunderland site.”
