JP Morgan To Create 500 Glasgow Jobs & Step Up Graduate Intake

American banking firm JP Morgan has announced plans to create around 500 new IT jobs in Scotland as it expands its technology operations in Glasgow over the next two to three years.

The company has also revealed that is taking on more student talent from universities as it ramps up the number of Glasgow graduate jobs it will offer over the coming years.

The move will see JP Morgan increase its headcount in Glasgow before the end of 2017 by around 50%. By then, the banking giant will become an employer of over 1,500 people in the Scottish city - almost double its Glasgow staff levels of just two years ago.

JP Morgan has had a technology centre base on Waterloo Street in Glasgow for over 15 years, but has just signed a lease to stay on at the Alhambra House for ten more years at least. Technology staff at the Glasgow centre work on support functions to the JP Morgan business, including services such as back office systems and mobile applications.

Commenting on the plan to get more graduates into the company, and then keep them within the fold, Paul Murphy, JP Morgan’s managing director of the Glasgow European Technology Centre, said:

“The draw when we set up in Glasgow was the university pipeline and that is still pretty much the case. This year we have taken 30 graduates and next year it will be 50.

“Their experiences of what they are using technology for and how they run their life is changing. So when they come into a work environment they are demanding different services than maybe traditionally would have been thought. When we bring them in we challenge them to disrupt and bring different ways of thinking and not just accept the norm.”

“It is a very complex business we are in. It can take people a number of months or even years to become expert. You need to keep those people motivated and excited,” added Mr Murphy.
