Aldi are to submit plans which could see the supermarket chain creating around 400 new full and part time jobs in Leicestershire by the end of 2017.

The German discount supermarket firm wants to build a 55,000 square metre distribution facility near the village of Kegworth in Leicestershire in order to supply ambitious store expansion plans which could generate 35,000 new Aldi jobs by 2022.

If North West Leicestershire District Council council pass the plans, then work could get under way on the new Aldi warehouse facility as early as next year.

Outlining the plans, a spokesman for the supermarket said: “This is major investment for Aldi. The distribution requirements of the business need to keep pace with the growth of our retail outlets, and we therefore have an urgent need to deliver a new centre to serve our Midlands region. We have been in talks with North West Leicestershire District Council to ensure that the scheme is deliverable, and we are hopeful that planning will be approved and we can be on-site during 2015.”

Early signs from the council are encouraging, with North West Leicestershire District Council’s leader, Richard Blunt, saying they will be working with Aldi on the plans and welcome their interest in the region:

“The possibility of Aldi bringing at least 400 new jobs to our district is very promising. The site at Sawley is ideally placed on the main road network. As such, this site makes a suitable location to meet the immediate and future distribution needs of Aldi’s growing business, as well as providing significant new jobs and investment for the residents of the area,” said Councillor Blunt.
