Over 30,000 More Christmas Jobs Delivered For 2014

We’ve already told you about a Christmas jobs boost of 1,000 permanent vacancies at Amazon and 3,700 temporary holiday positions at Royal Mail. Now, we can bring you fantastic news of over 30,000 more Christmas vacancies being created by the surge of deliveries expected over the next few months.

Amazon have made a new announcement that their total recruitment of temporary vacancies this Christmas will be for 13,000 positions and Royal Mail now say that they are looking for a whopping 19,000 people to fill their Christmas jobs this year. In addition, Yodel, another UK delivery firm, says it needs 5,000 extra staff on a temporary basis for Christmas 2014.

The Royal Mail handles over 100 million parcels during December, their busiest month of the year, but will be taking on thousands of temporary staff as early as mid-November. England is to get a 15,000 Christmas jobs boost from the company, while Scotland will see around 1,000 vacancies advertised by Royal Mail. There will be a further 600 holiday jobs in Wales and 400 in Northern Ireland. The balance of 2,000 temporary jobs which will make up the 19,000 Royal Mail jobs will be roles across their Parcelforce Worldwide business.

The 1,000 Amazon jobs we reported on earlier in the month were permanent positions, but the 13,000 Christmas vacancies they’ve just announced will be temporary roles to see them through a very busy festive period. However, Amazon say that some of the new recruits taken on as temps could find themselves with a permanent job after the Christmas holidays.

As with the permanent roles at Amazon, the temporary Christmas jobs will be split between their fulfilment centres and customer service facilities at Doncaster, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Gourock and Swansea.

At peak order times Amazon UK sells over 2,500 items every minute, and, on their busiest day of December 2013, over 4 million orders were placed on the retailers website.

John Tagawa, Amazon’s UK operations director, said: “The thousands of seasonal associates who join us at this time of year play an integral role in helping us deliver an exceptional experience for our customers during this incredibly busy time. We look forward to welcoming back those associates who join us each and every Christmas as well as many new faces who are joining the Amazon team for the first time.”

Meanwhile, Yodel, whilst being a much smaller delivery operation than either Royal Mail or Amazon, has still managed to announce recruitment plans for 5,000 Christmas jobs over the coming weeks. Over half of the temporary Yodel jobs will take the form of self-employed courier roles so that interested applicants can work hours to suit themselves around their own local area.

As with the Christmas jobs at Amazon, there is a chance that some of the temporary positions at Yodel will be converted to permanent roles after the holidays...
