Amazon UK, the internet retail giant, has said it will create a further 1,000 jobs at eight fulfilment centres around Britain in the build up to a busy period of Christmas trading.

Although a mere fraction of the 15,000 seasonal positions that Amazon created this time last year, the 1,000 jobs will be permanent full time roles with the company rather than temporary positions.

We don’t as yet know the breakdown of which locations will advertise the most vacancies - but it is thought that the positions will be split between the retailer’s facilities at Doncaster, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough and Rugeley in England, Dunfermline and Gourock in Scotland, and at Swansea in Wales.

Amazon UK has increased its headcount by 50 per cent in the last two years and the new round of recruitment will see the company’s staff levels move from 6,000 to 7,000. The new Amazon staff will start on an average wage of over £7 an hour and could be earning close to £9 an hour before the end of 2016.

Amazon UK’s director of operations, John Tagawa, said: “Over the past two years, we have added well in excess of 2,000 new employees to our workforce and we are delighted to be able to add a further 1,000 to that number over the coming months. We have continued to focus day in, day out on providing the very best shopping experience for our customers and as we see greater demand, we are able to rapidly grow our talented team across the UK.”
