Jobs Growth Wales Has Created Over 14,000 Jobs For Young People

Jobs Growth Wales, an EU-backed incentive programme designed to help Welsh youths to become employable, has now created over 14,000 temporary jobs for young people in Wales.

The programme places 16 to 24-year-olds into jobs for six months and guarantees them at least 25 hours work a week at the national minimum wage or above. Over 4 in 5 young people who complete the programme in the private sector go on to find further employment enrol in some form of education.

The Jobs Growth Wales programme has been running since April 2012 and has created an average of around 500 new temporary jobs for young people in Wales every month. Over £80 million of funding has been provided for the programme, which will run until at least 2016. Of the 14,500 new full and part time positions advertised through the programme, over 11,000 vacancies have been filled by job seekers under the age of 25.

Over 4,700 businesses, of all sizes and staffing levels, have now offered a route into work through the Jobs Growth Wales initiative.

Ken Skates, who became the Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology last June, explained some of the reasons why the initiative has been such a success for Wales:

“By reimbursing employers for a young person’s wages at national Minimum Wage for the first six months, Jobs Growth Wales provides the stability needed for expansion and drives productivity with the help of hard-working, talented young people. This is why more than 11,000 young people in Wales have now been given the chance to demonstrate their full potential in meaningful, paid employment. It’s a win-win situation,” said the Welsh Labour politician.
