300 Sainsbury’s & Netto Supermarket Jobs In North Of England

A £25 million Sainsbury’s/Netto investment partnership could create over 300 new supermarket jobs in the north of England before the end of next year.

After a four year absence from the UK, Danish supermarket chain Netto has decided to reenter the British shores and will open 15 new Netto stores over the next 18 months or so. The new chain, which the deal with Sainsbury’s has helped facilitate, will have its headquarters in Wakefield and a distribution centre in Scunthorpe.

Some details of the deal and the exact locations of the new supermarkets and facilities are yet to emerge, but a spokesperson for Netto said: “We are developing plans for a number of new Netto stores across the north of England, with our headquarters based in Wakefield. We will continue to update the local community as we progress.”

The new Netto stores will sell a range of fresh food produce and will also feature in-store bakeries which will make fresh Danish pastries and loaves.

Explaining Sainsbury’s motives behind the investment, Mike Coupe of the supermarket chain said: “We are very excited about helping to bring the new Netto to British shoppers. This joint venture provides a great opportunity for us to gain exposure to the high-growth discount market for the first time in partnership with Dansk Supermarked [Netto’s parent company], whose expertise and values are a strong complement to our own.”

Mr Coupe added that if the 15 new Netto stores prove successful then the chain could be expanded throughout other parts of the UK.

Chief executive of Dansk Supermarked, Per Bank, pointed out the joint benefits that the 50/50 partnership will bring, saying: “We’ll offer market-leading value to customers with the freshness and innovation that customers rightly associate with Denmark. The discounter experience, operating model and systems of the Dansk Supermarked group, combined with Sainsbury’s UK market insight, property expertise and logistics excellence will help deliver a format we think UK customers will love.”
