Halfords To Add 500 New Jobs As UK Gets On Its Bike

Halfords, the chain of car parts and cycling equipment outlets, has said it is looking to fill 500 new permanent retail jobs as a cycling craze takes hold in the UK.

The recent surge of interest in cycling - due in large part to the successes, raised profiles and product ranges of cyclists like world champion Chris Boardman and Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton - have led to Halfords seeking hundreds more experts to fill roles at stores across the UK.

Events like the recent passing of the Tour De France through parts of England, with cyclists like Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish taking part, should only serve to further boost the number of cycles being sold across the country by Halfords in the coming months.

The company has reported an annual increase in turnover of almost 8 per cent for the three months from April to June, and Halfords’ cycle sales are up over 20 per cent on the previous three months. The rise compares to just a 4 per cent increase in sales on the auto parts side of the Halfords business.

Speaking about the financial results, chief executive of Halford, Matt Davies said: “Halfords continued to drive top-line growth in the quarter, with the cycling category delivering another exceptional performance. Our actions resulted in growth across all elements of cycling reflecting our continued focus in the category, enhanced by favourable weather and increased interest in the Tour de France.”

And, Halfords’ people director, Jonathan Crookall, said: “Cycling is at the heart of Halfords, and we’re enhancing our team with the biggest ever recruitment of cycling gurus for our stores. These 500 permanent roles will help us get even more of Britain cycling. Passionate people who want to apply should visit www.halfordscareers.com.”

The 500 new recruits will be spread evenly across Halfords’ 465 stores around the UK in an effort to provide an expert service to customers looking to purchase new cycles and equipment.
