2,500 New UK Supermarket Jobs At Lidl

Lidl has announced investment plans of over £200 million which will see the German firm open 20 new stores in the UK, creating around 2,500 full and part time supermarket jobs.

Lidl has around 600 UK supermarkets at the moment, but has ambitious plans to more than double that number to around 1,500 outlets in the UK at some point in the future. Last year, the budget supermarket chain invested over £150 million in its UK operations, opening 12 new outlets and generating 3,500 jobs for the economy.

In the latest expansion plans for Lidl in the UK, the company expects to create over 100 new roles with each new store opening over the course of the next nine months, creating hundreds of new job opportunities for students and other job seekers in various parts of the country.

Managing director of Lidl UK, Ronny Gottschlich, explained that the value-oriented and customer-focused business model of his supermarket was the main reason why his chain could expand so quickly in the United Kingdom:

“This latest phase in our growth is a testament to the continuing success of Lidl in the UK. People all over the country are realising they can make huge savings on their weekly grocery shop with us, without compromising on quality. We’re focused on a single goal – giving our customers the freshest, highest-quality products possible at the best value,” said Mr Gottschlich.

Lidl currently employs around 13,000 members of staff in various full and part time roles in the UK, so the current round of recruitment by the company will swell their ranks by a further 19% within the next few months.

The German supermarket chain’s latest expansion plans were welcomed by George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, who said: “It’s great news that Lidl is investing in thousands of new jobs across the UK – each job means security and a better future for another family and the country as a whole. Our long-term economic plan is working, and as the economy is growing businesses up and down the country are feeling increasingly confident about creating jobs.”
