Dixons & Carphone Warehouse Merger To Create 1,700 Retail Jobs

A merger between Dixons and Carphone Warehouse will create up to 1,700 retail jobs when the two firms become one.

The famous high street retailers will merge in a £3.8 billion deal, generating hundreds of new customer service and retail jobs in stores as well as other support areas of the combined business.

It seems that some jobs will be lost when Dixons and Carphone Warehouse merge, but that the number of new positions created will trump the number of positions lost by a ratio of around 2:1. Bosses predict that around 860 jobs will go between the two companies but that 1,700 retail and other vacancies will be created, taking overall employee numbers at the two firms from around 44,000 to 44,840.

A joint statement for both companies gave some predictions for the future of the merged companies: “It is expected that there will be significant job creation through the rollout of the Dixons Carphone integrated retail offering, resulting in an increase of approximately 4% of the combined group’s full-time equivalent employees. This is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2016.”

Carphone Warehouse began a partnership with US firm Best Buy six years ago but the venture ultimately failed, leaving some investors worried that a similar pattern will emerge with the Dixons deal.

Seeking to quell such doubts, chief executive of Carphone Warehouse, Andrew Harrison, said, “Best Buy was a different era — it was trying to build market share at a difficult economic time. Today is two market leaders who are flourishing coming together.”

And Dixons’ chief executive, Sebastian James, compared the merger with Carphone Warehouse to a flourishing marriage, joking that: “I’m happy to be the blushing bride today. I’m even wearing something blue.”
