A journalism student has won a career-boosting trip to Sierra Leone.

Iain Martin, a student at Cardiff University, will travel to the country to see how journalists there operate.

Mr Martin was awarded a £1,000 travel bursary by the Welsh Livery Guild - and has decided to use it to fund his month-long trip to the African country.

He was presented with the award for his work covering the Welsh elections for his student newspaper. He now hopes to find out more about how journalists in Sierra Leone deal with election coverage.

Mr Martin told Holdthefrontpage.co.uk: "Working abroad covering a major election is something most journalists aspire to.

"Reporters in Sierra Leone face many challenges and I'd like to witness first hand and from local journalists what it's like to work in a challenging media environment.

"It will be a new experience seeing a very different country from our own."

The Welsh Livery Guild makes a number of awards each year, primarily to promote skills and associated professional activities in Wales.

Several journalism students have already benefited from the award, which seems a valuable addition to any CV and gives recipients a credible foothold in what is an incredibly competitive profession.
