500 New Restaurant Vacancies and Retail Jobs In Glasgow

Up to 500 new full or part time Glasgow retail jobs and restaurant vacancies will be created with a massive expansion plan at the Scottish city’s Fort Shopping Centre.

Marks & Spencer will open a new store at the busy East End shopping site in Glasgow, creating around half of the total number of jobs that will be generated by the expansion. Other retailers and restaurants, yet to be revealed, will move into the 10,000 square metre development creating a further 250 full and part time Glasgow jobs at the shopping centre in the next twelve months.

The expansion at the Fort Shopping Centre will see total floor space increase by around 50 per cent and will come at a cost of £45 million. It will also see the number of jobs supported at the Glasgow shopping centre increase by 20 per cent from around 2,500 positions at the moment, to somewhere in the region of 3,000 by the middle of 2015.

Marks & Spencer will join other existing big retail names such as Asda, Boots, H. Samuel, O2, Phones 4u and WH Smith at the site. It is also thought that one big restaurant chain will sign up for the extra space at Glasgow Fort, adding to current places to dine and drink like Costa Coffee, Nando’s, Frankie & Benny's, Harvester, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and TGI Fridays. There is also a multi-screen Vue Cinema located at Glasgow Fort, providing further full and part time jobs for the local economy in the east of the city.

By the time the expansion is completed and all new businesses have moved into Glasgow Fort there will be close to 90 retailers and restaurants based at the shopping centre.

Phil Goodman, manager at Glasgow Fort, said he was delighted that development was now underway at the East End site:

“Marks & Spencer is a fantastic name to add to our list of stores and we are confident it will be a major draw for people visiting the Park. We are committed to supporting the local community and economy and providing meaningful support through schemes such as our tie-up with Jobs and Business Glasgow for access to employment. This is a major development for Glasgow Fort. It is almost a decade since we opened and this significant new phase is a fantastic way to celebrate,” said Mr Goodman.

Local councillor and Chair of Jobs & Business Glasgow, Jonathan Findlay, was also pleased with the announcement, saying, "We are delighted that hundreds of jobs are on their way to Glasgow's East End with this new development. Glasgow Fort is a significant contributor to the local economy and this news of further employment opportunities is very welcome indeed.”
