Asda Announce 12,000 New Supermarket Jobs

Asda, the major supermarket chain owned by US firm Wal-Mart, has announced five year strategy plans which it says will create up to 12,000 new full or part time UK jobs.

Before the end of 2019, Asda plans to add 100 new UK supermarkets, 150 forecourt shops and 40 new superstores, as well as enhancing and expanding their range of internet shopping and ‘click-and-collect’ services.

The Asda expansion plan will see the supermarket chain increase their UK headcount by around 7 percent over the next five years, meaning that the company will provide close to 185,000 people with full or part time jobs.

Speaking to the BBC, Andy Clarke, Asda’s chief executive, said: “What a great time to expand. The economy is recovering and we are doing well. We have been focusing on the discount and the premium market for some time.”

Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the Asda announcement and was thrilled by the financial confidence that the supermarket’s new full and part time jobs would yield for people over the next five years:

“I am delighted that Asda is continuing to invest heavily in the UK, creating another 12,000 jobs that will give people financial security for the future,’ said the Prime Minister.

Doug McMillon, the chief executive of parent company Wal-Mart, said that retail business in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world was undergoing significant change and that, by reacting early to the changes, Asda would continue to bring greater value to customers and create thousands of new jobs for Britain.

“We know that the UK is a great place to do business and, since Wal-Mart acquired Asda 15 years ago, we have been able to invest £8bn in the UK economy – creating over 100,000 jobs, opening 342 new Asda stores and bringing lower prices to millions of customers,” said Mr McMillon.
