TGI Friday’s To Create 700 New Restaurant Jobs In The UK

TGI Friday’s, the american restaurant chain, has announced expansion plans for the UK which it says will create up to 700 new full or part time jobs in the next twelve months.

TGI Friday’s will double its UK operations from current levels of around 60 branches to somewhere in the region of 120 restaurants before the end of 2020. This year alone, the chain will add seven more restaurants to its UK portfolio, creating an average of 100 jobs with each new opening.

Karen Forrester, chief executive of TGI Friday’s has said previously that the restaurant chain would like to attract more younger customers as the company seeks to shake off a perceived image as a families-only venue.

“Five or six years ago, we had no pipeline of new openings at all because no one wanted us. We were just seen as dated and landlords wanted newer, sexier things,” said Ms Forrester. A reworking of the TGI brand in the last few years has started to take root and is now paying dividends, leading Ms Forrester into calling 2014 an exciting year for the restaurant chain.

One of the ways in which TGI Friday’s is looking to bring in the younger crowd is by opening more new restaurants in university cities and big student areas like Brighton, Liverpool and Glasgow. They will also be adding outlets at concert venues and train stations - and will concentrate on a more drinks-oriented culture and tapas style food at certain branches.

Ms Forrester added, however, that TGI Friday’s didn’t want to open too many new restaurants too quickly and dilute one of the brand’s major strengths - the fact that their restaurants are seen as a venue for special occasions. “We don’t want a Friday’s on every corner,” she explained.

Speaking about one of the new TGI openings in the North West, David Carroll, UK property director for T.G.I. Friday’s said: “We have been looking for the right location in Liverpool for some time, so we’re delighted to announce that we have found the perfect venue. The investment reflects the strategic value of the site to our ongoing growth plans and we’re looking forward to starting work soon.”

TGI Friday’s already have a presence in Liverpool, but the new restaurant which will be housed at the Liverpool One shopping centre will create a further 80 new jobs in the city. The six other new TGI restaurants which will open during 2014 will add a further 620 restaurant jobs throughout the UK, and most of them will be perfect opportunities for students and other young people looking for work.

If you are a student thinking about part time jobs, then restaurant and bar work at places like TGI Friday’s is always a good option. It’s flexible, it pays well, and you often get tips over and above your normal wages.
