Subway, the US chain of sandwich restaurants, has announced plans to almost double the number of outlets it runs in the UK and Ireland. The massive growth spurt by the company, set to take place over the next six years, will create up to 13,000 full or part time catering jobs, according to the successful franchise company.

At the moment there are around 1,600 Subway restaurants in the UK and just over 120 in Ireland, but the expansion plans forecast a further 1,300 new openings before the end of 2020. With an average of 10 new full or part time job opportunities being created with each new branch of Subway, thousands of vacancies suitable for UK students will be created by the company in the next few years.

With just 150 new Subways launched last year in the UK and Ireland, the future expansion plans for an average of over 200 further restaurants openings each year represents a significant increase in growth rate - outpacing competitors such as McDonalds.

Shedding light on what is driving the growth of their sandwich chain, Subway’s European assistant regional director, Mike Charest, said: “The UK and Irish markets have been fantastic success stories for the Subway brand and we see opportunities for further growth as more and more consumers demand great tasting food at a value price-point. The introduction of a varied breakfast menu and longer opening hours have been instrumental in increasing store footfall.”

Mr Charest added that Subway was looking to cast its net wider than the high street with future store openings in the UK. Future growth of the company could include more outlets at ‘universities, stations, convenience stores, hospitals, airports and petrol stations,’ said the regional director.
