In what could become the latest venture between B&Q and Morrisons, Sunderland looks set to host a joint store merger of the DIY retailer and the supermarket chain. If plans get the green light then the move could create up to 300 full or part time Sunderland retail vacancies and supermarket jobs.

The new double store would be located at the existing B&Q site on Trimdon Street in Sunderland, but alterations would be carried out to reformat the DIY store as well as making room for the new Morrisons’ supermarket.

B&Q and Morrisons already co-host at merged stores in Ipswich, Preston and Wigan - and now the firms want to persuade the general public of Wearside that a new venture in their area would be in their best interests.

Speaking about what benefits the joint venture would bring to Sunderland - in addition to the new jobs it will generate - B&Q's Steven Blair, said: “We want to offer our Sunderland customers the best that we can in home improvement and the new size store will include new features and services that will not only inspire customers but will also help them to undertake their home improvement projects.”

Mr Blair added that working in conjunction with Morrisons would allow them to offer their customers in Sunderland the highest possible standard of retail service whilst enhancing the overall shopping experience for visitors to the store.

Morrisons and B&Q will pitch their plans to the public in Sunderland later this week in an effort to get them behind the new joint store and the hundreds of full and part time jobs it will create.

Morrisons’ development executive said: “We hope for a good turnout at the event, as we are interested to hear what local people think of the proposal.”
