A proposed £300 million development of bars, restaurants, shops and accommodation could create up to 1,800 new temporary and permanent hospitality and retail jobs in Chester according to local councillors.

Development plans for the Northgate Street area have been around for over 20 years, but progress has recently been made on a deal for Cheshire West and Chester Council to buy up over 80 per cent of the land from developers ING Real Estate.

Up to 200 temporary jobs would be created in Chester during the construction phase of the Northgate redevelopment - and a further 1,600 permanent Chester jobs would open up once the leisure and retail facilities are up and running.

Based on cash spending per capita, Chester was a top 30 retail performer as recently as 2006. By the end of last year, however, the north west town had fallen out of the top 50 retail centres in the United Kingdom. It is hoped that the redevelopment of Northgate will reverse the town’s retail fortunes and add hundred of full or part time jobs to the economy of the area.

Ben Powell, Labour councillor for Chester West & Chester Council said of the proposals: “The Northgate Development is not only critical to Chester‘s ability to resist strong competition from its neighbours, it will also bring benefits for the whole of the Borough in the shape of investment, tourism and new jobs.”

Councillor Mike Jones was also excited that a deal had been reached with ING Real Estate, describing it as, ‘a truly momentous moment for Chester.’
