Wrights Food Group, a local pie company, has announced that it will be looking to fill over 100 new full or part time jobs in Crewe next summer.

The family business - which first started to make pies in 1926, the year of the General Strike in England - is ramping up production of its dessert range of products and will need dozens more hands on deck at its new factory in 2014.

Wrights Food Group currently employs around 500 people in the United Kingdom, so the new recruits in Crewe next year will swell their ranks by more than 20 per cent as the company expands its product range.

Chairman of Wrights Food Group, Peter Wright, said that the business was expecting a very busy period of trading in 2014. Their new Crewe production factory for desserts will cost £5 million and will take up 50 thousand square feet of the town.

“Since 2007 we have doubled the turnover of the business. On the savouries side we produce 600,000 products every day, a third of which are sausage rolls. It is due to open in August and will create about 110 jobs,” said Mr Wright.

Clients of the Wrights bakery include the Ministry of Defence, which it has been supplying for almost 20 years. The Crewe firm has said it will be sending over 200 thousand mince pies to British soldiers who are serving overseas this Christmas.

Paul Colman, the chief executive of South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with the announcement from Wrights, saying: “It’s fantastic news that a local company is growing.”
